What Not To Do When You Lose Data

Data on the hard disk is important enough as it could lead successful business enterprises into bankruptcy. When business firms face data loss problems, it requires extreme knowledge and technical skill to salvage the situation. The backup media they have might not be workable for the efficacies of these data storage devices are not periodically tested.

The IT personnel in any organisation are in a state of acute tension after losing access to the information kept stored on the hard disk. The knowledge that lost information has jeopardised the working of the entire company is debilitating. Data loss is not only a source of great agitation to IT personnel; even individual pc users suffer badly. For many an individual the pc is a source of livelihood.

If you are one such pc user, who has experienced data loss, your first reaction would be to salvage as much data as possible. However, before you make any attempt at data recovery, remember your initial acts after the data loss determine recovery possibilities. Many women randomly depress some keys when the screen turns blank and thus aggravate the problem further. Men are vociferous and swear at the system. This verbal expulsion of annoyance is better for it does not affect data recovery chances.

Data Loss -- What Not to Do

Hard drives eventually fail; either gradually or all of a sudden. If you have been hearing odd noises emanating from your system, then create a backup for all the important files on your disk. Never ever save new files in such a situation.

Before you plan to retrieve lost data using ‘Do it yourself’ software, assess the nature of the problem. Do not use the ‘DIY’ software for physical problems of the disk; it would damage the data permanently.

While checking your emails, do not open attachments sent by unknown people. Neither should you install programs from sources whose credibility you are not aware of. This might infect your pc and compound the problem further.

Exercise caution and never indulge in the following acts. You might inadvertently overwrite the very data you are hoping to recover.

  • Do not download the data recovery software

  • Even if you have data stored on a backup media do not install that data on to your computer

  • Never surf online and download anything on to the pc.

  • Do not work and create new documents at this juncture.

So whenever you face a data loss situation, sit down and relax. Review the situation. This process is necessary for it induces calm and helps in formulation of a problem-solving technique. Never hurry yourself and search for a ‘quick fix solution.’ Solicit the services of data recovery service providers, for data is too valuable to self-attempt retrieval.

Data Recovery Service Providers

Work temporarily on the data provided by the backup storage device. Remove your hard disk and ship it to the data recovery service providers. Lost data is ideally retrieved by data recovery experts. Years of experience and constant training elicit successful performance from them, even in the most trying of circumstances. These experts have successfully salvaged data from crushed disks. At other times, they were able to retrieve data off mud-packed hard disks that had reached them in a frozen state. These incidents highlight their professional prowess and expertise.

They have at their disposal specialised tools that have been developed in their in-house research and development department. (Latest data recovery equipment is required to work on the fast-evolving hard disks.)

Data recovery experts first assess the situation. They function under the motto of doing no harm to your data. They make a mirror image of your hard drive. (Hard drive copies are not possible when the disk is physically much damaged.) Recovery work is performed on this copy, and the original data is thus left intact. They first recover the most important data.

Data recovery service providers are not inexpensive. However, the loss entailed by lost data is always considerably more than the charges of the experts. Moreover, the data recovery service providers offer free evaluation. They only charge if your data is recoverable, and as already mentioned, only your initial acts determine whether the data is recoverable or not.
